Yes, for most people, as long as the race matches where you're starting from. Four months, about 16 weeks, is plenty for a sprint or an Olympic distance triathlon. It's the build I suggest for a half Ironman if you already have some fitness. For a full Ironman, four months is only enough if you're already fit and have raced long course before.

Here's how I'd look at it, distance by distance.

## Sprint (750 m swim, 20 km ride, 5 km run)

If you're reasonably active already, four months is more than enough. You could get there in two. Use the extra time on your swimming: it's the leg that worries most first-timers, and it's the one that improves fastest with good technique.

## Olympic (1.5 km swim, 40 km ride, 10 km run)

Four months works well from a decent base. My free [12-week Olympic distance plan](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/free-training-plans/) assumes you can already swim, ride and run comfortably, so 16 weeks gives you a month to get there first.

## Half Ironman (1.9 km swim, 90 km ride, 21.1 km run)

Sixteen weeks is the build I recommend in my [guide to training for a half Ironman](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/grants-complete-guide-to-training-for-a-half-ironman-70-3-triathlon/). You start around six to seven hours a week and build to ten or eleven in the biggest weeks, with an easier week every fourth week. If you already have a solid base, a 10-week plan can be enough. If you're starting from lower down, give yourself closer to 20 weeks.

## Ironman (3.8 km swim, 180 km ride, 42.2 km run)

For a full Ironman, the work that matters starts long before the last four months. As I said on [the Effortless Swimming podcast](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/psychology-of-performance-effortless-swimming/) in 2016:

> What people fail to realise is that the absolute meat and veggies is in that winter period. Training always runs in arrears: what we do today is going to benefit us in three or four or five weeks.

So four months works if you're coming in with a year of steady training behind you. From scratch, give yourself longer.

## What decides it for you

- **Where you're starting.** Your current fitness matters more than the number of weeks.
- **Your swimming.** If you can't swim the distance comfortably yet, add time.
- **Your hours.** Be honest about a normal week, not your best one.
- **Your injury history.** If you get hurt when you build quickly, build slowly.

## Making four months count

- **Be consistent.** Four steady months beat two big ones and two injured ones.
- **Keep most of it easy.** That's the [80/20 rule](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/eighty-twenty/), and it's how you get fit without breaking.
- **Back off every fourth week.** You get fitter while you recover, not while you train.
- **Practise race day.** Eat and drink in training the way you will in the race.

Then hold the plan loosely on the day. As I said on [the Effortless Swimming podcast](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/race-on-instinct-effortless-swimming/):

> You can have a rough plan, but once the gun goes off, that thing should unfold instinctively. Whatever you've trained should surface instinctively.

If your stomach's saying no and your watch says it's time for another gel, listen to your stomach.

Start with one of my [free training plans](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/free-training-plans/). If you've got a big race coming and want a sanity check on your build, a once-off [athlete review](https://www.grantgiles.com.au/work/#review) is a good fit.
