Be a leader of your own unfolding development.
The best we can do as coaches is to point, mentor, and support. I’ve got to completely remove my expectations of the athlete so they’re free to roam their own experience.
The most dangerous thing an athlete can do is work toward fulfilling someone else’s expectations.
They generally produce their worst training and racing that way.
Discipline is inherent. You’ve gotta take yourself on …. take responsibility for following your own journey.
I’m gonna tell you the truth of what I believe about real talent:
You can’t produce something great if you already know what it’s going to be. What you really need to do is be alert to what’s happening.
Here …. ground zero…
It’s that bloody simple!
There is no coherent framework for bringing out your own talent. You are solely responsible for that.
There is no prosthetic for the lack of your intuitive process.
Gut instinct. Work on that.
In the arts, in sport, everywhere — true talent is exposed by listening, paying attention, staying here, and not running away over there. Allowing it to unfold without interference.
F..k what others have done …. they are not you!
Most of your psychological suffering …. and indeed your physical suffering is a matter of being lost in thoughts, concepts, ideas, and philosophy.
All of it breeds doubt. It’s all talk, no action.
Unfurling your deepest potential is going to take something radical. In my own life that was incredibly painful and challenging, but I’m so grateful for it.
Radical change is bloody uncomfortable. It requires that you move against what everyone else is frightened of doing …. following their own instincts.
How do you know when you’re doing something radical?
Because you can’t see where you’re going....
That takes real guts.
In the end, following your own knowing means you have to find faith and trust where no one else wants to look.
Inside.
