Like water off a duck’s back. You are Teflon …. shit doesn’t stick.
Don’t try to stop things from going wrong. Just be prepared for it.
There’s this idea that life …. or performance …. should be polished and perfect. So most people end up training for perfection instead of reality.
Diamonds are formed under immense pressure.
That’s where talent gets separated from will. Talent won’t go through the rough without will. But will can go through the rough without talent. Will rises above talent because it accepts the rough.
“You cannot be polished if you are irritated by every rub.” ~ Rumi
This went wrong, that went wrong… nothing went wrong. Reality just did what it’s gonna do …. and you’re out of sync with it.
That disconnect from reality? That’s called an excuse.
Shit happens …. and not two flying f..ks are given by reality for excuses.
So what are you gonna do?
Get real.
See it for what it is: you’re breaking your experience into likes and dislikes.
In the performance world, that’s a massive problem.
You’ve got to stop having an opinion on what happens, and start looking at your response to it.
An excuse is a reaction.
If you’re worried about failing in front of others …. that’s pure reactivity before it even happens.
I see this across so many athletes, in so many sports ….
you’re training for reactivity, not response.
Look at your reactivity.
Where do you resist? What are the bullshit escape-artist thoughts you come up with?
Sounds rough as guts, but lovingly …. excuses are for those preparing to lose.
The practice is this:
Melt yourself, again and again, into the rough. Give up the resistance. Release the tension.
Cease to give a f..k about what others think.
That, right there, is the most profound act of self-love you can give yourself.
And once you do ….
reality will start to meet you.
Reality is never in opposition.
You are.
